Been an avid gardener for many years, but never raised any roses. How do you root new plants from an old one?

Roses are almost indestructible. 1 method, you can graft into an exsisting plant in you yard or buy an established potted plant of high quality. All roses have been grafted and the first several inches of the plant are root stock which the flowering portion is grafted to.

I would suggest getting an “how to book” on grafting or consult a master gardener in your area. It’s not all that hard to do but would take way to much time to explain and in the end this is what you would be doing anyway. there are several steps involed that would need to be diagramed with an explanation of the techniques.

Method 2 dig up part of the plant below ground line, repot it, baby it and will it probably grow.

#3 get a cutting and see if you can get it to root using rooting homones.

This can be loads of fun go for it have fun you could be opening a whole new world of gardening for yourself.

I too am an avid gardener and for years I never grew roses. I must say I do now!!! A friend had given me a beautiful bouquet of roses that she cut from her own garden, I took 4″ cuttings off of these and stuck them in the ground making sure to plant a leaf node. I then covered these “twigs” with a glass jar and kept them watered. After I saw new leaf growth I removed the jars. I had one to bloom that year. I have done this in the fall and spring with success. Older roses can also be progated by layering. Simply lay a cane on the ground. Dig a small hole and bury the cane at a node, keep watered until roots form.
